It is not uncommon for some people to feel nervous before their first massage therapy appointment. There might also be questions that some individuals feel are too embarrassing to ask. These fears, however, can prevent us from making the most out of our massage sessions.
That’s why today, the professionals at Mimico Physiotherapy and Chiropractic will answer some of the more embarrassing questions that people are reluctant to ask. They will explain what you can expect during treatment and hopefully answer most of the questions you might dread asking.
That is arguably the most common question and probably one of the least embarrassing. How much clothing you remove is entirely up to your preference and comfort level. Most people will leave their underwear on while others don’t have an issue removing all their clothing and prefer being completely nude.
In any case, the registered massage therapist will step out of the room and give you enough time to undress and prepare for your massage session.
Sometimes the amount of clothing you remove can also depend on the massage and target areas. Nevertheless, whether it’s a foot or deep tissue massage, it’s still up to you to decide how you feel most comfortable. Overall, the more you relax, the better the quality of the massage session.
Falling asleep during massage therapy happens more often than you think, and there’s nothing wrong with it. Moreover, it means that your body is fully relaxed, your mind soothed, and you are in a state of self-healing. Snoring and drooling are also common and are nothing to fear.
It’s crucial to put your trust in your massage therapist and focus on relaxing. If you are still sleeping at the end of the massage session, your therapist will gently wake you up, and that’s also nothing to feel embarrassed about. In some cases, you might feel so relaxed that you won’t even want to get up!
That is possibly the most embarrassing question for most people. As the registered massage therapist rubs our soft tissues, they can cause our digestive systems to relax and gas to move around.
Passing gas during massage therapy is normal, and practitioners are used to it. It’s always better to release gas than to hold it, as this can prevent you from making the most out of your massage session.
Nevertheless, if you find your digestive system to be on the sensitive side, you can always ask for a quick break and head to the bathroom.
Whether you want to talk to your practitioner during your session is entirely up to you. Some people prefer to remain silent to relax fully, while others find it more entertaining and worthwhile to talk to their therapist.
In any case, your practitioner will accommodate your preferences, and you shouldn’t feel obliged to keep a conversation or be silent.
Tipping is standard practice when you are pleased with service you receive. Nevertheless, it will depend on the culture of the location.
Tipping is customary at hotels and massage spas, but it might be less frequent in medical environments.
When in doubt, you can always ask the receptionist whether or not tipping is a common practice.
Feeling uncomfortable and unable to relax can significantly hurt the quality of your massage therapy sessions.
